“Snobs, keep out” of these “hectic” “seafood shacks” with “fabulous lobster rolls” and “well-prepared but simple” “fried fish standards” that are “reasonably priced”; Westbrook offers “table service”, a “broader menu” and a bar, while the adventuresome “rough it” at the BYO Madison branch with its “counter service”, “paper plates” (“don’t expect to impress your date”) and seasonal “carousel” that “kids love.” |

Lenny & Joe's Fish Tale was named having the Best Sandwich: Lobster Roll in CT by Connecticut Magazine
They wrote:
"Lenny & Joe's is the gold standard-hot dripping-with-butter lobster meat stuffed into a split-top hot-dog roll. The quality's the same whether you enjoy it in Westbrook (we love the enclosed porch) or casual Madison (near Hammonasset, with a "Flying Menagerie" charity carousel outside). You can also take it out, but we dare you to make it back to I-95 before polishing off the whole thing"

In 2009 Connecticut Magazine selected the 50 Dishes To Try Before You Die. They called them dining-out musts, from hot lobster rolls to cook-your-own Kobe..They wrote:
"The hot lobster roll at Lenny & Joe's Fish Tale is a Connecticut invention that was, is and always will be blissfully simple: hot chunks of lobster meat and melted butter served on a sturdy split-top roll. Lenny & Joe's does a particularly nice job of it. "

The Middletown Press featured Lenny & Joe's Fish Tale in a front page story on June 22, 2009. The story was about Lenny & Joe's hot buttered lobster roll being named to a list of "50 Foods to Eat Before you Die" in Connecticut Magazine.
Jennifer Sprague from the Middletown Press decided to try the lobster roll for herself and she wrote, "the hot buttered lobster roll was exactly as it should be: full of hot chunks of lobster meat and melted butter, served on a split-top roll with a side of coleslaw."
She also spoke with other customers also waiting to dine. 'the crowd could not agree on their favorite dish. Some said lobster, others said fried clams or chowder, but they all agreed it's worth the wait."
"You know it's good when youy have to wait an hour," said Steve Howe.
Dana Pelletier gives the lobster a 9 out of 10. "I've been coming here since I was a kid," she said. "....Everyone comes here."

In the May 2009 edition of Saveur Magazine, Lenny & Joe's Ct's Culinary diversity was celebrated. Our Lobster Roll was named as 1 of the 5 Featured CT Sanwiches. They wrote:
"Think Connecticut is one big suburb? Think again: its diverse immigrant communities, fertile farms, and vibrant university towns full of forward-thinking chefs add up to as rich a culinary landscape as that of many states three times its size.
1. A Connecticut-style hot lobster roll is sublimely simple: lobster meat, lots of butter, and a split-top hot dog bun. Try the one served at Lenny and Joe's Fish Tale in Westbrook." |

The 2nd Edition New England Clam Shack Cookbook

They wrote the following: Step through the doors of Lenny & Joe's Fish Tale on Route 1 in eastern CT and you feel that unmistakable energy and positive vibe-not to mention smell the mouth-watering aromas-identifying it as one of those truly successful establishments. Everything works here, thanks to owners Lenny & Joe and their attention to detail. Slide into a booth, put yourself in the hands of your experienced, friendly waitress, and settle in to peruse the extensive menu.
Start with a cup of their classic and uniquely full-of-flavor clam chowder or a plate of clams or oysters on the half shell, or steamers with butter and broth, or jumbo shrimp cocktail, or fried calamari, or crab cakes. You can't improve on a lunch of one of Lenny and Joe's seafood rolls.
I love their unpretentious yet absolutely outstanding Hot Buttered Lobster Roll, and all the fired seafood rolls and platters (stip or belly clams, scallops, shrimp, or oysters) are wonderful options. Lenny and Joe also offer a full panoply of broiled seafood-scrod, sole, catfish. scallops, salmon. Portions are huge, so plan to share.
Happily, the Fish Tale is open year-round, so if you are craving a hit of summer in the off season, this is the place.

| What the Clamshack Cookbook says about some of our Recipes( and they include recipe for home versions) |
Clam Chowder
Oh, what a lovely chowder they "build" at Lenny & Joe's in Westbrook, CT. It's done in typical southern New England style-untouched by flour, mostly clear broth, but with the addition of just enough milk to soften the rough edges of this primal brew. |
|
Classic Hot Buttered Lobster Roll
You can find hot buttered lobster rolls in establishments scattered all along the coast, but this pristine, mayonnaise-free vaiation on the homarous snadwich tends to be associated with more southern New England. Lenny & Joe's Fish Tale is the ideal spot to sample this beauty, which is very-very simply indeed-lobster claw and tail meat warmed and gilded with clarified butter and then heaped into a grilled top-loaded bun.
|
|
Fresh French-Fried Zucchini
Batter-dipping, crumbling, and deep-frying strips of zucchini is such a delicious concept. Lenny and Joe's are crispy and golden brown- a heaping basket is the perfect starter to share for the table!

Dinner & a Movie Review • New London Day May 31, 2007
Some Highlights from the Review
"Lenny & Joe's has been a mainstay of the kind of food for which New England's summer resorts are known. Open from lunch through dinner, its strengths lie in the freshest ingredients, capable service, and to be blunt a good bar."
"We began with a cup of clam chowder and a basket of fried calamari. The owners pride themselves on their clam chowder, a hybrid of traditional Rhode Island and New England recipes. Small bits of clam and cubed potato add substance to a light clam broth to which the slightest bit of milk has been added......and the chowder isn't bogged down with flour."
"The calamari, too, were a hit. In my 15-year experience, the restaurant has done a good job with fried fish and shellfish. The squid were coated with a crisp breading and remained tender-no rubbery overcooking."
"Hot Buttered Lobster Roll is first among equals"
"A plate of sweet and lightly breaded whole clams was about as good as fried clams can get."
"it was accompanied by Lenny & Joe's coleslaw, crisp and tart, sprinkled with dill seed, and only distantly relating to cabbage salads smothered by mayonnaise."
"We also loved a casserole of fresh lobster and rock crab meat, topped with breadcrumbs and swiftly run under the broiler."
"despite the constant turnover of well-fed clients, its staff remains sungularly accomodating."

"Lenny & Joe's kitchens, which turn out New England
seafood classics, all good, some great....I beeline for the
scallops: stunningly sweet with just the right flesh-to-crunch
ratio. Another winner is the fish and chips, made with scrod.
....the chowder is a Rhode Island-style (brothy, not creamy),
and it tastes like a marina in the very best sense.
...the kitchen also deep-fries soft-shell crabs, in season,
to great effect. The tartar sauce here is not an afterthought,
but made fresh with heaps of chopped dill pickles.
....their hot buttered lobster roll has won awards, which
is not surprising!"

Highlights from Summer on a Roll:
"For a hot roll filled with lots of buttert lobster, I go to Lenny & Joe's in Madison & Westbrook."

Highlights of 2002 Edition
......Lenny & Joe's remain casual eat-places.....the quality
of the food is impeccable, and the quantities are awesome.
the whole-bellied fried calms are big and succulent with
golden crusts. We also love the fried shrimp & scallops,
even simple fried fish.......the undecided customer will be happy
ordering a variety platter with some of everything. It is a gargantuan
meal....the other necessary item would be an order of fried onions;
Lenny & Joe's onion rings are wicked good!
Lenny & Joe's is one of the few reliable places for a hot lobster roll...
.nothing but chunks and shreds of lobster meat heaped into a long roll.
This is pure bliss...in seaon, the kitchen also offers a softshell crab roll
that is almost as luscious.
|
|
Highlights of 1992 Edition
both are feed-the-familky eating barns and are choice places
to eat maximum amounts of top-quality shoreline food at minimum prices...there aren't many kitchens that know how to fry fish as well
as Lenny & Joe's.
.....clams are sheathed in a fragile, tender crust that tastes great.
The whole-bellied ones are behemoths-big, weighty clods of luscious, nectareously tender clam encased in their breading....whatever size
you order, you get more then you expect......onion rings are well worth
it-big crunchy hoops with a real onion sweetness ....
....we have eaten superb hunks of char-broiled, smoky flavored
swordfish Steak and satisfying casseroles of broiled shrimp with
garlic and a swell baked stuffed shrimp!
.....and then there is the lobster roll....presented in a long, butter-grilled split wiener roll, it is loaded with pieces of lobster meat.... |

friends who have traveled the world

....there is a place that goes out of it's

...if you prefer your fish fried, you'll find the surface soft and
flaky, not clothed in a coat of greasy snadpaper! The secret is
in the batter. Instead of preparing and stacking a hundred filets

It takes a little longer, but we could certainly taste the difference."
